Time flies...

...when you're feeding, burping, changing, rocking and making funny faces at a baby. I can't believe three months have gone by since I went on maternity leave. I don't think I mentioned on this blog that a week after I called my boss and quit, he called me back and offered me a sweet freelance editor job that I can do from home. I'll be the editor of The Bluffton Packet, the weekly tab I was in charge of before I took the features editor job a year ago. Plus I'll get to keep writing my weekly column for the daily newspaper.

All in all, that should give me about 25 hours of work a week, all (with the exception of having to go on the occasional face-to-face interview) from home. My trusty IT buddy Morgan came by the house last weekend to hook me up with a sweet computer and monitor from work so that I can design the pages and hook into the work servers and printers from home. And Chris took a beautiful antique desk we bought on our honeymoon in Asheville and rehabbed it into a gorgeous, modern version of its former self. It now matches our decor and will be my home base for work, right here in the living room. How blessed am I?!

So, I have one more week of "vacation" left before I go back to work. Well, that's not entirely accurate, since I started writing a book about five weeks ago, 50 percent of which is due to the editor by Sept. 3. So I guess I have one more week left before I have to somehow find time to write a book, edit and design a weekly newspaper, write a weekly column, and, oh yeah, care for a 3-month-old.

They say moms are the best multi-taskers. We'll see if that theory holds water. Right now all I can focus on is getting rid of this nasty head cold...

Something tells you me you'll manage to pull everything off with the same flair you've always had, Rob. Good luck and congrats!

You will be utterly amazed at how much you can accomplish, now that your new super mom powers have had time to develop. I've been back at work about a month and a half now and I've never been a more efficient and productive worker. You get used to not procrastinating and doing what you can when you can when you are caring for that little person. You'll be great!
PS. I have some tips for you for your book if you still need them. I don't have your e-mail though.

Oh man... just when you think you've escaped, they pull you back in!

Sounds like a pretty sweet gig though.
